City of Science Belval

New cradle for public-private collaboration

Research and innovation are key drivers for building a competitive economy based on science and knowledge. Taking this into account, Luxembourg attributes an increasing importance to the “Knowledge Triangle” concept, which aims to strengthen the links between higher education, research and innovation.

As a consequence, the Luxembourg State has confirmed the construction of a City of Sciences, Research and Innovation on the old industrial site of Belval in the south of the Grand Duchy. The City of Sciences will be located on the Blast Furnace Terrace with Luxembourg’s last blast furnaces at the very centre. This flagship project foresees the conversion of this industrial wasteland into a future space for living, working and culture with the construction of around 25 buildings over 15 to 20 years.

The City of Sciences will consist of a number of “thematic buildings”. From 2015 onwards, the main research actors will be present. Luxinnovation will be located here, beside the University of Luxembourg, the Public Research Centres and the National Research Fund. The site will also host a new national incubator.
